Addis Ababa, the capital, is situated at an altitude of 2,300 metres in the highlands. Founded in 1887 by Emperor Menelik I, the city, whose name means "New Flower", is one of the largest cities in Africa with some two million inhabitants. It is home to the headquarters of the African Union and has one of the largest numbers of diplomatic missions in the world (120 foreign embassies and diplomatic missions). There are many sights worth a day's visit: St George's Cathedral, built in 1896 to commemorate the people's victory over the Italians, the Ethnology Museum, the Menelik Museum with its sumptuous Axumite and medieval collections, the Trinity Church, the Ghibbi Palace and the Mercato, one of Africa's largest markets, are not to be missed. Stroll through the Mercato, one of the largest markets in Africa. Admire the many art galleries. St George's Cathedral, the Museum of Ethnology, the Menelik Museum with its sumptuous Axumite and medieval collections, the Trinity Church, the Ghibbi Palace. The National Museum of Ethiopia is famous for its palaeontological room which houses the skeleton of Lucy, our ancestor, who lived 5.5 million years ago. The food here is delicious and spicy, accompanied by wine produced in the Great Rift Valley. Try the injera, a kind of large gluten-free pancake with spices and meat. You will bring back with you Arabica coffee, wine from the Rift Valley.
